Can do a full image backup of the source drive and then do incremental or differential backups to backup changes that occurred since the last backup.

Multiple backups can be imaged to the backup drive until the backup drive gets full. So the backup will be smaller in size than the source drive.

The image of the source drive is saved on the backup drive without unused areas and with compression.

IMAGE: Using a 'full ' image backup, the entire source drive is copied to the backup drive in such a manner that when a restore is done, all of the data is copied from the backup drive to the new drive so that the new drive ends up being an exact copy of the original source drive.

CON is that an entire drive must be used to hold the copy of the source drive.

The only difference will be that the cloned drive will not contain changes that were made to the source drive after the clone operation. This would be important in a business environment where time is of the essence.

PRO is If the clone is of the system drive where the C: partition resides, then the clone drive will be immediately bootable and usable.

If the source drive fails, then it can just be replaced by the clone drive and used immediately. Its good to keep at least three images in case one does not work, but the Macirum images have always been reliable for me whereas Windows created disc images have NEVER worked.Д¬LONE: Copies everything on the source drive to the clone drive. I just delete the older disc images as I will never use them. I do this with every big Windows or program updates.

The free version requires manual backups. If you are restoring to a drive the same size as the original even the free version will create correct sized partitions. With the free version when you restore from an image to a new drive that is larger than the imaged drive you need to manually resize the target partitions but the paid version should do that automatically. To use a program like Macrium you need to understand a bit about partitions. You need to make and keep the boot disc from Macrium, using a USB key or CD/DVD, and make sure it works. The image is smaller than a clone would be. It is actually better in Windows to image the drive with Macrium than clone it. I also have relied on the free version of Macrium for years. There's a lot about MR I don't know, and I'm sure the users of the paid version will have more to say. That can still be quite large if there's a lot of data on the source drive. The target device needs to be large enough to hold the image file, which in my experience is somewhat smaller than the contents of the source drive. For both cloning and imaging I like to use the 'rescue' Windows PE USB flash drive that Macrium can create after being installed on a PC. Yes, an exact copy, bootable and everything.

The paid version can do more I think it can even migrate complete OS installs from one PC to another.

I've used Macrium Reflect Free for all my backup needs for years, and yes, it will back up entire drives easily. Note sure when to use what.but willing to learn.:-) Whereas, 'imaging' copies whatever is on a PC to maybe a thumb drive or CD/DVD? I kinda get the idea that 'cloning' means to copy HHDs/SSD to another same size or larger disc. Old and slow, but still trying to learn! Your patience is my virtue! In time, I'll figure it out, but first on my PC, then on her various laptops, it has a keyboard that doesn't always type what you try to type.

That Sager has a 500GB SSD, I don't know how much it's filled up, but figure this Macrium Reflect software 'should' be all I'll need to copy EVERYTHING on her Sager laptop? I hope. Recently bought her a new HP Envy, but can't get her to take it out of the box 'until' she's copiedvarious stuff on her present Sager laptop running W7.
